Mao worship has been a highly visible phenomenon in the cultural and political landscape of post-reform China. This article illuminates religious, cultural, and political meanings of Mao worship in China today based on an analysis of the life history and magical activities of a Chinese spirit medium called maozhuxitonglingdashi (毛主席通灵大师). Firstly, it looks into an empirical case of Mao worship newly burgeoning under the radically changing material and symbolic orders of Chinese society today, focusing on the life history of Mr. Bai referring himself as a spirit medium of Chairman Mao. Secondly, it sheds lights on the deification process of Mao revealed through the life history and popular religious practices of Mr. Bai in the context of China’s religious traditions, thereby demonstrating that the spirit of Mao has become one of the most powerful gods in China’s religious pantheon having rapidly revived in post-reform China. Finally, this study suggests that Mao worship has become a significant field in which the religious, the magical, and the political intersect each others in Chinese society today, while illuminating its political meanings in terms of the politics of magic.

이 연구는 “모주석통령대사”(毛主席通灵大师)라 불리는 한 중국인 영매의 생애와 민간신앙 활동에 관한 인류학적 현장연구를 기반으로 오늘날 중국 사회에서 모택동 숭배가 갖는 종교적·문화적·정치적 함의를 조명한다. 이를 위해 첫째, 모택동 주석의 영매를 자칭하는 백선생(白先生)의 생애를 통해 개혁개방 후 중국의 변화한 물질적· 상징적 질서 하에서 새롭게 부상한 모택동 숭배의 경험적 사례를 들여다본다. 둘째, 백선생의 생애와 주술적 활동을 통해 드러나는 모택동의 신 되기 과정을 중국의 종 교적 전통이라는 맥락에서 조명하고, 모택동이 개혁개방 후 급격하게 부활한 중국의 종교적 판테온에서 가장 강력한 신으로 자리매김했음을 밝힌다. 셋째, 모택동 숭배의 장이 오늘날 중국 사회에서 종교, 주술, 정치가 의미심장하게 교차하는 지점임을 논 증하고, 그것이 가지는 정치적 함의를 주술의 정치라는 개념 하에서 규명한다.
