This study examines the thought and activities of Chen Yingning, a leading reformer of modern Chinese Taoism. His motto, ‘Independence of Xianxue’ has had a profound impact on modern Chinese thought and religion. The incursion of Western powers following the Opium War in 1840 led to a period of reflection and introspection on existing social structures and traditional values. This, in terms of religion and ideology, led to the emergence of Neo- Confucianism and a series of Buddhist reform movements, exemplified by Humanistic Buddhism. However, the activities of Taoism during this period have been relatively neglected. This paper explores the theoretical establishment and practice of ‘Female Neidan’ and ‘Neidan’, which Chen Yingning developed to reform Taoism in the modern era, as well as his publication of magazines, lectures at Taoist institutes, and the absolute influence he exerted in revitalizing the Taoist sect, which was on the decline and unable to find a way out at the time.

본 연구는 현대 중국 도교의 대표적 개혁가라 할 수 있는 천잉닝(陳攖寧)의 사상 과 그의 활동을 조명한 글이다. 이른바 그가 주장한 ‘선학 독립’이라는 모토는 중국 현대사상과 종교적인 측면에서 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 1840년 아편전쟁 이후 중국에 불 어닥친 서구열강의 침입은 기존의 사회구조와 전통적 가치에 대한 반성과 성찰로 이 어졌는데, 종교와 사상적 측면에서 신유학의 등장과 인간불교로 대표되는 일련의 불 교 혁신운동이 전개되었다. 그러나 이 시기 도교의 사상적 변혁 활동에 대한 조명은 비교적 소홀한 편이다. 이에 본고는 천잉닝이 현대시기 도교 혁파를 위해 전개한 ‘여 단’과 ‘내단’의 이론적 정립과 실천 그리고 당시 활로를 찾지 못하고 쇠락의 길을 걷 고 있던 도교 교단의 활성화를 위한 그의 잡지 발간, 도교 강원의 설립과 강의 및 도교 교단 현대화를 위한 천잉닝의 활동이 끼친 절대적 영향력을 중점적으로 탐구하 고자 한다.
