This study builds upon previous research on water monsters (水怪 shuigui) featured in the “Aquatic Creatures(水族 shuizu)” section of the “Taiping Guangji (太 平廣記)”, and presents an in-depth examination of their most prominent supernatural ability―transformation. These mythical beings, which inhabit rivers, lakes, and seas, possess the power to alter their form and identity, often interacting with humans in mysterious or threatening ways. The primary sources for this study are 179 stories compiled in volumes 464 to 472 of the Shuizu category. The research begins by surveying the distribution of transformation motifs throughout the collection and classifying the types and meanings of metamorphosis based on the entities’ states before and after transformation. Building on this framework, the analysis then explores transformation in terms of its conditions of occurrence, underlying motivations, narrative processes, and the continuity or dissolution of its effects. Through this approach, the study reconstructs the worldview surrounding ancient Chinese shuigui, and sheds light on how transformation reflects the cultural imagination and ontological perspectives of early Chinese society. Transformation is shown not merely as a fantastical device, but as a culturally encoded narrative structure expressing tension between nature and humanity, the familiar and the unknown. Ultimately, this research enhances the relevance and interpretive value of classical literature in a modern context. It also contributes to broader understandings of the historical roots and evolving characteristics of Chinese maritime culture. Moreover, the findings offer meaningful insights for contemporary applications, particularly in enriching the content and creative strategies of maritime-themed cultural media such as animation, games, webtoons, and exhibitions.

본 연구는 태평광기(太平廣記) ｢수족(水族)｣류 수괴(水怪)에 대한 후속 연구이자, 수괴의 주요 능력인 ‘변신(變身)’에 대한 심화 연구이다. 주요 텍스트는 ｢수족｣류 9권 (권464∼권472)에 수록된 179편의 이야기이다. 우선 변신의 분포 상황 및 변신 전후 의 존재 형태에 따른 변신의 유형과 의미를 개괄하였고, 이를 바탕으로 이야기의 실 제 내용에 근거하여 변신의 발생 조건과 변신의 목적, 변신의 과정 및 지속과 해제 등으로 구분하여 변신의 원리와 메커니즘을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 중국 고대 수괴 의 세계관을 구축할 수 있었으며, 변신이라는 장치 속에 들어있는 고대 중국인의 문 화적 경험과 상상력의 양상을 살필 수 있었다. 이는 고전의 활용 가치를 높여 현대 적 의의를 더하는 작업일 뿐 아니라, 중국 해양문화의 역사적 연원과 시대적 특징을 탐색하고, 해양문화콘텐츠의 내용을 풍부하게 만드는 성과가 될 것으로 기대한다.
