A Study on a Patriotic Discourse in Chinese Disaster Films : Focusing on Liu Weiqiang(刘伟强)‘s Movies
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the theme consciousness in the movies of being shown in Liu Weiqiang’s disaster films, namely, and . This can be considered to touch the way the disaster movies are covered dubbed ‘What does a disaster movie mean in China?’ or ‘What does the government try to gain from disaster movies?’. A movie is reflecting the current trend and society. The flow and reflection in this way can be manifested through how the film is recreating the disaster and the people facing it. The analysis on Liu Weiqiang’s two movies can be mentioned to have a significance with regard to understanding about the social order and values pursued by the Chinese government and about the formation and application of a discourse. In Chapter 2, the features of Chinese disaster films were examined. The section that shapes the discourse of patriotism and devotion for the nation is being sought through what there is the absence of a cause for disaster, what the main character who overcomes a disaster is a public figure along with regarding him as a hero, and what it is a drama but reproduces a real case. In Chapter 3, the patriotic discourse of a disaster film is being parsed through the analysis of characters and narratives in two movies. A disaster film came to be grasped to work as an ideology in favor of the Chinese government in terms of restoring the existing order.
