Abstract

The word “弄” is one of the representative dummy verbs in modern Chinese and corresponds to the Korean word “하다(do)”. However, “弄” causes considerable confusion to Chinese learners due to the ambiguity of the meaning of “do” which indicates a non-specific action. As a result of analyzing the corpus data in this paper, “弄” was used as a verb and was followed by a complement in most cases. When “弄” is combined with a degree complement and resultative complement, “弄” has the property of a causative meaning. In addition, when “弄” is combined with an object, it has the same meaning as “acquisition“, “production“, “occurrence“ and “handle“. When “弄“ stands for “acquisition“, “production“ or “occurrence“ most of its objects are accompanied by a measure word. When examining the process of changing the letter shape, “弄“ appears to be holding jade with two hands. “弄“ has expanded its meaning to “touch“, “handle“, “manipulate“ and “deceive“ as the focus goes on the motion and profiling applies to “hand“ from the composition of the letter shape. And depending on the purpose and the result of the motion, it has changed to mean “to play with“ or “to acquire“. In addition, in the case where the part of “jade“ rather than “hand“ of the letter gets illuminated, it has implied the meaning of “an object to be handled“, “an object to belong“ or “an object to be manipulated“ due to the characteristic of being an inanimate object, and is bound to undergo changes by external forces. By reflecting this feature, therefore, “弄“ potentially implies causative meaning.
