Abstract

『Shuowen Jiezi』 is a dictionary. A dictionary is, after all, a set of letters for the search of a particular letter. This means that it has an inevitable mission to promote the convenience of readers who use the dictionary. In the first primary stage, Xu-Shen(許愼) succeeded in classifying 9,353 characters into 540 subjects, which are also known as radicals. In the second primary stage, the task of arranging these 540 radicals in a certain order is not easy. The method he chose is to primarily arrange the radicals in sequence based on their form. However, this alone is not enough to connect the 540 radicals, so he added meaning to the radicals, which is known as The principle of arranging radicals based on their forms(據形系聯) and The principle of making the meanings(共理相貫). Duan Yucai(段玉裁) of Qing Dynasty analyzed this as Arrangement based on forms(形相次) and Arrangement based on meanings(義相 次). This paper analyzes the 14 radicals of Shuowen Jiezi volume 1 in detail regarding forms and meaning. Therefore, it aims to clarify how each radical is related. In the conclusion, we analyzed 14 radicals of relationships in terms of serial and parallel relationships, and based on this, we clarified how each relationship is organically related.
