This study is to suggest the subject “What is Jiang hu?” and to survey the symbolic meanings Jiang hu and its effect on narratives of Jin Yong‘ Kung-fu novels, focusing on his Jiang hu. The author raised the tension of novels through Jiang hu background like confidential sites such as caves, cliffs and secluded valleys and used the narratives more actively. He depicted Jiang hu background as Wu gong training site. This can be thought as writer’s artificial set-up to raise the tension of every narratives‘s progress. If these spaces were appeared in the novel, narratives are not stopped and concluded. If readers learn these Jiang hu backgrounds, they expect new change of circumstances more naturally. Every factions of Jiang hu, the main living place, formed the conflict structure of Jiang hu which divided the good and the evil and made a binary opposition. Jin Yong gave a question about a generalized good and evil concept of Jiang hu through the conflicts of every factions. He expressed the topic sense of novels. The norms of everry factions of Jiang hu have a binding force like moral standards and rules of today. The writer expressed the order consciousness of Jiang hu world through it.

본고는 ‘江湖란 무엇인가’라는 논제를 두고 金庸의 무협소설에 묘사된 江湖를 중심으로 江湖가 지닌 상징적인 의미와 서사에 미치는 영향에 관해 살펴보았다. 山洞을 비롯한 絶壁, 幽谷 등과 같은 江湖 배경은 외부 세계로부터 격리된 은밀한 공간으로 작가는 이러한 江湖 배경을 통해 소설의 긴장감을 고조시키고 서사를 보다 생동적으로 운용하였다. 이들 江湖 배경은 무공 연마의 장소로 제공되기도 하며, 보물이 감추어진 장소, 은둔의 공간 등 다양한 상징적 의미를 지니며 묘사되었다. 모두 서사의 진행에 긴장감을 고조 시키기 위한 작가의 인위적인 설정이라 볼 수 있는 이러한 공간들이 소설에 출현하게 되면 대부분 서사가 종결되고 단절되는 것이 아니었고, 독자들 또한 이러한 江湖 배경을 접하게 되면 자연스럽게 새로운 상황의 변화까지 기대하게 된다. 또 주로 名山에 위치한 俠의 주요 생활공간인 江湖의 각종 門派는 각기 正과 邪로 진영을 나누어 二元對立하는 江湖의 갈등구조를 형성하였고, 金庸은 이러한 문파의 대립과정을 통해 江湖에서의 일반화된 善惡觀에 의문을 제기하며 소설의 주제의식을 표현하였다. 그리고 江湖 문파의 門規는 현실사회의 도덕 규범이나 법률과 같이 구속력을 지닌 것으로 작가는 이들 문파의 門規를 통해 江湖 세계의 질서의식을 표현하였다.
