This study examines leisure poems written by Bai Juyi, a poet during the Tang Dynasty of China. Bai Juyi wrote these leisure poems when he was alone after resigning from official duties or while rehabilitating from illness. This study aims to analyze the meaning of ‘leisure (閑適)’ contained in Bai Juyi‘s leisure poems through observation of the world of consciousness revealed within his poems. First, from his leisure poems, examination was made upon the poems narrating the yearnings for leisure out of the pressures coming from the reality which the author was unable to escape. These poems were included within the scope of leisure poems by the author himself. But when the contents were closely examined, the poems were filled with the details where the author was ashamed of himself and longing for being leisurely rather than seeking for being relaxed away from the reality. Second, the study was able to look into poems where the author boldly projected himself into the domain of leisure by taking a step further from longing for being leisurely. These poems generally went beyond the obsession to the reality as soon as experiencing the borderline of being leisurely. Subsequently, the will of the author appeared evident to continue maintaining such world of consciousness. Lastly, it was learned that the entire poems were filled with pleasure from leisure. Taking a look at the specifics, anxiety toward the reality was nowhere to be found. The borderline of mindsets seemed empty and liberal, and it was found that the poems were full of joyfulness from leisure itself. Based on these findings, the study can be deemed helpful to more specifically examine the world of consciousness revealed throughout Bai Juyi‘s leisure poems.

본고는 中國 唐代 詩人 白居易의 閑適詩에 관하여 고찰한 글이다. 백거이는 유가 집안에서 성장하여 과거시험을 거쳐 官界로 입문하였다. 입문 후 30대에 천자에게 직언을 서슴지 않는 간언을 하는 左拾遺의 직을 수행하면서, 정치사상 및 신념에 바탕을 둔 문장과 강렬한 현실 풍자가 담겨있는 풍유시를 많이 창작하였다. 그러나 일련의 정치적 사건을 겪으면서 40대에 江州司馬로 폄적된 이후에는 풍유시와는 다른 성격유형의 시들을 많이 창작하였다. 그는 문집에서 자신의 詩에 대해 ‘諷諭詩․感傷詩․閑適詩․雜律詩’ 등으로 분류하고, 분류한 기준에 대해 설명을 가하였다. 본고에서 다루는 한적시에 대하여는 공무에서 물러나 홀로 있거나 혹은 병으로 한가로이 거하면서 족함을 알고 심신을 온화하게 유지하면서, 성정을 읊은 시들이 라고 하였다. 이에 본고는 백거이의 한적시가 내포하고 있는 ‘閑適’의 의미를 작가의 시 속에 드러난 意識世界의 관찰을 통해서 분석해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 작가의 한적시 가 그 의미를 충실하게 반영하고 있는 지를 고찰하였다. 먼저 그의 한적시 가운데는 차마 떨쳐버리지 못하는 현실의 중압감으로 인해 한적에 대한 동경심을 읊은 시들이 고찰되었다. 이러한 시들은 작가 스스로 ‘한적시’의 범위에 포함은 시켰지만, 그 내용을 들여다보면 현실에서 벗어난 여유 보다는 스스로를 부끄러워하며 한적함을 동경하는 의미의 내용들로 채워져 있다. 다음으로는 한적함에 대한 동경에서 나아가서 한적함의 영역 안으로 자신을 과감하게 투영시키는 시편들을 고찰할 수 있었다. 이러한 시편들은 대개 한적함의 경계를 맛본 순간에 현실에 대한 집착에서 자유로워져, 향후 이러한 세계 에서 벗어나지 않고 계속 정주하려는 작가의 의지를 살펴볼 수 있었다. 마지막으로는 시편 전체가 한적의 즐거움으로 채워져 있는 작품들이다. 그 내용을 들여다보면 현실에 대한 불안 감은 찾아볼 수가 없고, 마음의 경계가 텅 비고 자유로운 한적함 그 자체의 즐거움으로 가득 차 있음을 살펴볼 수가 있다. 이를 통해 그의 한적시 창작은 그의 한적에 대한 영원한 동경과 추구, 이를 통한 실천의 결과물이라는 것을 알 수 있게 해주었다.
