A study of ZhuBajie in terms of desire

Abstract

This paper examines the shapes of desire and their meanings by analyzing ZhuBajie’s divers and diverse shapes of desire in terms of Buddhism. In this analysis of ZhuBajie’s disciplinary process and its latent meanings, his role and position in Xiyouji is elucidated. Before dealing with ZhuBajie’s world of desire and its meanings furthermore, this paper describes some characteristics of ZhuBajie’s life and entity because his personal life history is needed to the understanding of desire basically, and looks into his world of desire and its latent meanings through his behaviour and psychology. Through this analysis, it explores the issues of desire in human existence and the ways of freeing from desire deeply. This analysis goes as follows: 1) characteristics of ZhuBajie’s life and entity; 2) ZhuBajie as a representative character of the secular; 3) ZhuBajie’s discipline and its meanings.
From those research findings of ZhuBajie’s desire in terms of Buddhism, human’ sufferings derive from desire, so it presents the way of how to overcome sufferings possibly through the discipline of eradicating desire. Thus, ZhuBajie as a representative of the secular is created as a character full of life by the description of how he is led to discipline himself and of showing the divers and diverse shapes of Desire, Anger, Foolishness which he exposes in the process of discipline. Consequently, the creation of ZhuBajie as a character enhances the literary interest and curiosity in Xiyouji.
