An Understanding about Korean Appeard in Cai Yuanpei's Diary
Abstract
Cai Yuanpei(蔡元培) is relatively well known to Korea. Mostly education, philosophy, ethics, and his dissertations relevant to esthetics were introduced but it is a fact that characters such as Lee Guanyong(李灌鎔) and Cynn Heungwu(申興雨) interacted with Cai Yuanpei have never been known to us. Characters like Lee Guanyong and Cynn Heungwu were not mentioned in 『Cai Yuanpei's Biography(蔡元培評傳)』 from China, furthermore even a line about interaction with Cai Yuanpei in the dissertations about Lee Guanyong and Cynn Heungwu was not found. Therefore the range of direct or indirect interaction with writers and thinkers of modern and contemporary Korea and China can be expanded through this paper.
『Cai Yuanpei's Diary(蔡元培日記)』 is a record taken a good 47 years to be finished from 1894 to 1940. In fact, it began to be written as the title of 『Zhifutang's Diary(知服堂日記)』 from 1890. However it took only 31 years to be recorded actually owing to various circumstances. The original record holds academic value in investigating the life and various activities of Cai Yuanpei, and his everyday affair and microstoria.
First of all, this paper analyzed Cai Yuanpei’s perception about Donghak Peasant Revolution, the Sino-Japanese War and Korea royal refuge at the Russian legation. Donghak Peasant Revolution and the articles concerned with the Sino-Japanese War emerged frequently in his journal from 1894 to 1896. That is, the contents about Yihaishuo(乙亥朔) on June 13 and July, Guimao(癸卯) on August 29, Gengin(庚寅) on September 17, Wuxu(戊戌) on September 25, Wushen(戊申) on October 5, 1894 and Yichou(乙丑) on January 30, 1896 were analyzed and their corelation was revealed.
Second, the paper analyzed the situation of the interaction with Lee Guanyong when Cai Yuanpei went to Switzerland for inspection and the interaction with Cynn Heungwu in Hawaii, USA. This way, a new prospect in the field of comparative study in Korea and China can be expanded by discovering new materials through the journal. And it is believed that East Asian thought and culture map of modern and contemporary can be traced through the expansion.
