Lin Huiyin's View of Women and Bing Xin's Satire
Abstract
Lin Huiyin and Bing Xin showed outstanding achievement in their works, thus they are recognized as the great writers. The two women writers were familiar with each other because their spouses were the alumni. However, their relationship had been worse due to Bing Xin's satirical works, "I advise you"(1931) and "Our wife's living room"(1933). So why Bing Xin published these works ? In this study, it is because the two women writers' view of womanhood was different.
Bing Xin thought that the maternal instinct had great influence on children and that the trained new women could make Chinese homes escape from old customs and evils thus new China could be born. Whereas Lin Huiyin showed an interest in living of women and felt sorry for the reality which even women with the ability must be buried at home. Therefore, independent and active ego and the overturned traditional gender roles appeared in Lin Huiyin's poems. Bing Xin and Lin Huiyin had the same opinions about education and enlightenment for women. But, because they had different point of view about home and nurture, they suffered from conflict.
