A Study on Types of Growth of Characters and Author’s Viewpoint in Ordinary World
Abstract
Ordinary World is the novel that Lu Yao, a famous writer of his age, told the lives of people in Shanbei who fought against trials and tribulations and pursued their dreams. This novel showed the 10 year period between 1975 and 1985, from the end of the Cultural Revolution to the beginning of China’s reform and opening up. Luyao showed that not only human life but also individual struggles and efforts through the growths of the three main characters. In particular, all the three shared a common element, ‘growth’, whereas they pursued different ideals. Two of them became the leaders of groups for public interests, whereas the other one went after his own dream. However, they focused on spiritual growth for fulfilling dreams with efforts rather than on physical growth for making something out of nothing. The author was good at adopting his own conflicts that he actually experienced between reality and dream when he described transitional ideas and social conflicts of people who tried to move from rural areas to urban areas in 1980. In other words, Sun Shao Ping, one of the main characters, succeeded to escape from rural areas and move to urban areas, but also fulfilled his simple dream at rural areas. Based on his own experience in both rural and urban areas. The author successfully touched readers’ hearts with situations of Sun Shao Ping who desperately wanted to escape from rural areas but ended his life at rural areas.
