A Study on the Meaning Expansion of Chinese Characters by Loan words Transcription and the Teaching Method : focused on the Monosyllabic Transliterated Words
Abstract
This paper described a transcription method of loan words in Chinese, such as transliteration, meaning and translation, free translation, borrowing etc. And then, described the meaning expansion of Chinese characters. In order to indicate the extension or borrowing and the type of classification of Chinese characters meaning, this paper selected fourteen monosyllabic words.
As a result, the Chinese characters belongs to the pure transliteration words, its meaning can be classification to borrowed meaning. And the Chinese characters belongs to the glyphs ideographic transliteration words, such as "磅、迈". Its meaning can be classified to the borrowed homophone extended meaning or shape extension borrowed meaning, because the shape and pronunciation are relative to loan words. And the Chinese characters belongs to the meaning and translation words, such as "酷". Its meaning can be classified to the borrowed homophone extended meaning, because the shape and pronunciation are relative to loan words. The borrowed homophone extended meaning or shape extension borrowed meaning. This type of meaning also considers the relation of the meaning and the pronunciation between the Chinese characters and loan words, so it's different from the existing type of Chinese characters meaning.
Transliteration of Chinese characters for a transcription of loan words is not only affect the meaning expansion and development of Chinese characters, but also can evince Chinese characters is flexibly adapted to modern society. This means Chinese characters still have strong vitality.
