Abstract

In this paper, we looked at the development process of novel text made in China Ming dynasty, and analyzed the cultural implications inherent in it. It is useful to approach orality and literacy synchronically, by comparing oral cultures and writing cultures that coexist at a given period of time. Human society first formed itself with the aid of oral speech. It became literate very late in its history and at first only in certain group. This study focuses on the relations between orality and writing. Literacy began with writing. But at a later stage of course, it also involves print. Song dynasty writers often extracted stories attracting popular attention from previous and contemporary literature. However, it was not a real script, but it was a kind of memo. Ming dynasty writers collected storytellers' script from previous dynasties and edited 'QingPingshantanghuaben' as well as the other anthologies. As the original manuscripts were handed down as individual articles which lacking unified text styles, there were always concrete texts which inherited literature of previous dynasties. It was the participating of Fengmenglong and other literati in the editing of storytellers' scripts that the unification of their text styles was basically realized. Three chapters (Two to Four) present illustrative analysis in the second part. Chapter Two concerns the process of from as an oral statement and as a deliver performance in Song-Yuan dynasty. Chapter Three and Four deal with the relation of Oral culture and Print culture in Ming dynasty.
